Liverpool Aim to Seal Transfer of Salford City’s Young Star Will Wright

Liverpool want to sign 17-year-old striker Will Wright from Salford City. A late bid helped them beat rivals Arsenal in the race to land him.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Wright made his first-team debut for Salford this season. Prior to that, he had scored more than 40 goals in the academy over the last campaign. Arsenal had reportedly reached a verbal agreement for Wright two weeks ago, but strong performances in pre-season saw Liverpool act quickly to swoop in and complete a deal with Salford. He is now undergoing a medical and the Merseyside club are expected to complete the signing soon. Notably, Will Wright scored four goals in three pre-season games, showcasing his potential as an emerging talent.

WHY WRIGHT IS IN DEMAND

Wright’s impressive goal-scoring record caught the attention of several Premier League clubs. He is one of only two 16-year-olds to feature in the FA Cup third round or beyond last season. The striker was in high demand because of his massive potential, which saw Liverpool and Arsenal engaged in a battle to land him. He could also feature prominently in Liverpool’s youth setup once his signing is finalised.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

If the deal goes through, Wright will join Liverpool’s youth setup and could play for their under-21 side this season. Liverpool finished as winners ahead of Arsenal in 2nd place in the league last season and will want to bounce back this time around. They face Crystal Palace in the Community Shield next. Arsenal will continue their pre-season preparations and will look to bolster their squad with more signings soon.
