Liverpool Assistant John Heitinga Set for Ajax Return as Head Coach

Liverpool’s assistant coach John Heitinga is close to becoming Ajax’s new head coach. The Merseyside club has given him permission to talk with the Dutch team.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Liverpool have allowed John Heitinga to negotiate with Ajax about becoming their head coach. Talks are moving quickly, and he is likely to take the job. Liverpool are already searching for someone to replace him in Arne Slot’s coaching team.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

This job brings Heitinga back to Ajax, where he has strong ties. He rose through Ajax’s youth system and was their interim manager from January to June 2023. He led the team to third in the Eredivisie and the KNVB Cup final, which they lost to PSV on penalties.

Ajax’s move comes after they missed the Eredivisie title on the final day of the season, finishing second. They had tried to hire Erik ten Hag, but he chose Bayer Leverkusen instead.

HEITINGA’S LIVERPOOL JOURNEY

Heitinga joined Liverpool in July 2024 after a time at West Ham United with David Moyes. He made a big impact at Anfield and even managed the team during a 2-0 win over Newcastle in February 2025 when others were suspended. Liverpool are the current Premier League champions, enjoying great success in Slot’s first season.

WHAT NEXT FOR LIVERPOOL?

With Heitinga leaving, Liverpool must now find a new assistant coach to keep their strong coaching team. They aim to defend their Premier League title and want to start next season well in August, with preseason games in mid-July.

Liverpool face the task of continuing their success without Heitinga, but they are actively looking for replacements, showing they are ready for this change.
