Liverpool Near Wirtz Signing as Transfer Talks Progress
Liverpool are close to signing Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz. The Premier League champions are in positive talks with the German club to get one of Europe’s best playmakers.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Liverpool have made an official bid of more than €100 million for Florian Wirtz. Talks between the clubs are ongoing. The 22-year-old German has told Leverkusen that he only wants to join Liverpool. Bayern Munich are reportedly surprised, as they usually sign top talent from the Bundesliga. However, they are likely to miss out on Wirtz.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Liverpool are trying to sign Wirtz after a successful season under new manager Arne Slot. Slot led the Reds to the Premier League title in his first season. After winning the title in late April, Liverpool’s recruitment team quickly started to strengthen the squad for the defense of their title. The club have already completed a medical for Jeremie Frimpong and agreed terms with Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez.
Wirtz is one of Europe’s top talents. He has recorded 23 goal involvements in two consecutive Bundesliga seasons. He was a key player in Leverkusen’s historic title win last season and continued his good form this year, even though his team finished second. Bayer Leverkusen’s managing director Simon Rolfes has confirmed Liverpool’s “concrete interest” in Wirtz. However, there is a difference in valuation. Liverpool’s €100 million offer is below Leverkusen’s €150 million asking price.
MANCHESTER UNITED SET RASHFORD PRICE
In other transfer news, Manchester United have set a £40 million valuation for Marcus Rashford. The English forward has had a difficult season at Old Trafford. New manager Ruben Amorim is making significant changes to the squad. United currently sit 6th in the Premier League standings, 22 points behind champions Liverpool. They will next face an ASEAN All-Stars team, which could be the final appearance for several players.
WHAT NEXT FOR LIVERPOOL?
According to reports, Liverpool want to finalize the Wirtz deal “very soon,” with talks restarting today. The Reds won the Premier League title with three games to spare, finishing the season with 92 points, eight ahead of second-placed Manchester City. If Wirtz joins, Slot would have a statement signing for his second season as Liverpool manager. The club are preparing to defend their title and compete in the Champions League.
The Reds will begin their pre-season campaign in July, and their first Premier League match of the 2025/26 season is expected in mid-August. If they secure Wirtz’s signature, the German will have plenty of time to settle in with his new teammates before competitive action begins.
