Liverpool Offer 19-Year-Old Spanish Defender Wellity Lucky New Four-Year Deal

Liverpool FC want to keep one of their best young defenders. They have given 19-year-old center-back Wellity Lucky a new four-year contract. His current deal ends this summer.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Liverpool have offered a four-year contract extension to Wellity Lucky. His present contract ends this season. Lucky, a center-back who can also play right-back, is considering his options. Clubs in Spain and Germany are also interested in signing him. Liverpool want to keep him. Lucky has been with their academy since he was an U13 player.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Born in Zaragoza, Spain, on January 12, 2006, Lucky has grown through Liverpool’s youth teams. He played for the U18s as an U16 player in the 2021-22 season. He signed his first professional contract in April 2023. This season, he has played regularly for Liverpool’s U21 side in the Premier League 2 division. His versatility and skills have impressed coaches.

Liverpool want to hold onto top academy talent. They are second in the Premier League table, four points behind Manchester City with three games left. Qualifying for the Champions League next season seems likely.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR LUCKY?

Lucky must decide about his future as his contract ends. Staying at Liverpool would keep him there until 2029. But clubs in Spain’s La Liga and Germany’s Bundesliga are also interested. Lucky might want to return to Spain, but Liverpool’s history of promoting young talent could convince him to stay.

A decision is expected soon because his contract expires shortly. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp will remain at the club until at least the 2026-27 season. Klopp has shown he is willing to promote defenders from the academy when chances arise.
