Liverpool Retires Number 20 Shirt in Memory of Diogo Jota

Liverpool Football Club has retired the number 20 shirt to honor Diogo Jota, who tragically passed away earlier this month.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, died in a car accident in Zamora, Spain on July 3.

A previous report confirmed that Diogo Jota’s brother, André, also died in the car crash.

Liverpool decided to remove the number 20 shirt from use at all levels, including men’s, women’s teams, and the academy. It’s the first time in Liverpool’s history that a player’s number has been retired. The club consulted Jota’s wife and family before making this decision. A tribute will be held before Liverpool’s friendly against Preston, with a song, a minute of silence, and black armbands in memory of Jota and his brother.

HIS LEGACY AT LIVERPOOL

Jota joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020. He quickly became important with his goals and hard work.

Diogo Jota made 182 appearances for Liverpool during his time at the club.

He scored 59 goals in those matches and helped Liverpool win trophies like the Premier League.

Jota won one Premier League title with Liverpool.

He was popular with teammates and fans. This season, Liverpool finished as the Premier League champions, having recently won their 20th English top-flight title in the 2024/25 season.

A previous report confirmed that Liverpool finished last season as Premier League champions.

Jota scored 15 goals and made 7 assists, despite missing games due to injury.

LOOKING AHEAD: THE NEXT MATCH AND TRIBUTE

Liverpool’s next match is a pre-season friendly against Preston North End. They will join in the tribute to Jota. The match will start with a minute of silence and displays honoring the late forward. Liverpool fans and players will remember Jota’s impact. The club has confirmed that no future player will wear the number 20 shirt, ensuring Jota’s place in history.

A previous report confirmed that Liverpool has lowered flags at Anfield to honor Diogo Jota’s memory.

Liverpool aims to start the new season strong, building on last year and carrying Jota’s legacy forward.
