Liverpool Secure Freddie Woodman on Free Transfer

Liverpool have signed 28-year-old goalkeeper Freddie Woodman on a free transfer from Preston North End. The experienced shot-stopper will strengthen the Reds’ goalkeeping options as the third-choice behind Alisson Becker and new recruit Giorgi Mamardashvili.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Liverpool confirmed the addition of Freddie Woodman after the expiry of his contract with Preston North End. Woodman made 138 appearances in his three years with the Championship side, earning the club’s Player of the Year award in 2022-23. A former England U21 international, Woodman also played for Newcastle United, Swansea City, and Kilmarnock in his career. He will join pre-season training at the AXA Training Centre next month and is set to provide depth as third-choice goalkeeper for the 2025-26 campaign.

LIVERPOOL’S SUMMER SO FAR

This summer marks a period of significant change at Anfield. The club has already brought in Giorgi Mamardashvili, Georgia’s national team first-choice goalkeeper, making Woodman the third new goalkeeper signed in this window. Liverpool finished last season as Premier League champions, with considerable margin to second place Arsenal, and will be looking to defend their title under new manager Arne Slot. The team will start their new season against newly-promoted Leicester City, with Manchester City and Arsenal also strong contenders at the top of the table.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR WOODMAN AND LIVERPOOL?

Woodman is expected to provide reliable backup behind Alisson and Mamardashvili, ensuring Liverpool have solid cover in all competitions as they compete for silverware domestically and in Europe. Slot’s side will aim to build momentum early in the campaign and cement their dominance in the Premier League. Liverpool’s next match will be their season opener against Bournemouth, who finished in the middle of the table and have sold them left-back Kerkez, while the Reds look to maintain their place above key rivals in the standings.
