Luka Modric’s Real Madrid Exit Confirmed Despite Desire To Continue

Real Madrid legend Luka Modric will leave the club this summer after 13 glorious years at the Santiago Bernabeu. The Croatian midfielder, who turned 39 this season, wanted to continue for another year but the club has decided not to renew his contract.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Real Madrid has confirmed that Modric‘s contract, which expires on June 30, 2025, will not be extended despite the player’s wishes to stay longer. The club has scheduled a farewell ceremony this Saturday against Real Sociedad, which will be Modric’s final home game at the Bernabeu. Since arriving in 2012, Modric has made 590 appearances for Los Blancos and won an incredible 28 trophies, making him the most decorated player in the club’s illustrious history.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

According to Croatia national team coaching staff member Nikola Jerkan, Modric still had “the fuel to continue for another year” and even discussed staying with incoming coach Xabi Alonso. However, the decision appears to have been made by club president Florentino Pérez and the board rather than the coaching staff, with the view that Modric’s cycle at Real Madrid is coming to its natural conclusion. The club is focusing on integrating younger talent into their squad as they prepare for a new era.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR MODRIC?

Despite leaving Real Madrid, Modric has no intention of retiring just yet. The Croatian midfielder reportedly plans to continue playing after participating in this summer’s FIFA Club World Cup with Los Blancos. He has received offers from clubs in Saudi Arabia and Major League Soccer (MLS), giving him options to extend his playing career. Modric has tentatively set the summer of 2026 as his retirement date, suggesting he aims to play at the 2026 World Cup with Croatia before hanging up his boots.

MODRIC’S LEGACY

Modric leaves Real Madrid as one of the greatest players in the club’s history. His trophy cabinet includes 6 UEFA Champions League titles, 6 FIFA Club World Cups, 5 UEFA Super Cups, 4 LaLiga titles, 2 Copa del Rey trophies, and 5 Spanish Super Cups. Beyond the numbers, the Croatian’s elegance on the ball, vision, and leadership have made him a beloved figure among Madrid fans and respected throughout the football world.
