Man City Closing In On Rayan Cherki
Manchester City are moving closer to signing Rayan Cherki from Lyon. The player has agreed personal terms with City, who are Premier League champions. Although Cherki, 21, wants to join City, both clubs are yet to agree on a fee, which is expected to be higher than €30m (£26m).
What’s the latest?
City have sorted personal terms with Cherki, but are still negotiating a transfer fee with Lyon. Liverpool are also interested in the 21-year-old, but Cherki wants to join City instead of moving to Anfield. Cherki will sign a deal until 2030 once the clubs reach an agreement.
Lyon demanding high fee
Lyon have already rejected City’s opening bid of around €23m (£20m) and want a fee closer to €40m (£35m). The club are holding out for a higher fee, even though Cherki has just one year left on his contract and scored 12 goals in 44 games last season. Cherki can slot straight into City’s midfield if a transfer is agreed.
Cherki keen on City move
The 21-year-old is ready to join City, despite spending his entire career at Lyon. “I’m ready for any system. I work every day, physically and mentally, to be ready,” Cherki told L’Equipe. His ability to play in multiple positions will make him a strong addition to the City squad.
What else can City do?
City have identified PSG’s Xavi Simons as an alternate option if their move for Cherki falls through. Simons spent last season on loan at RB Leipzig and is reportedly keen on joining the Premier League. However, City’s primary target remains Cherki, and if the fee is agreed on, the player could join before the club plays in the Club World Cup in November.
