Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim supports striker Rasmus Højlund, asking for patience even after another goalless match.
WHAT’S THE LATEST WITH HØJLUND?
Højlund missed a big chance as Manchester United lost 1-0 to Wolves. He has scored just once in 28 games. The pressure is on the young striker, especially since first-choice striker Joshua Zirkzee is out for the season with an injury. Amorim says taking 22-year-old Højlund out of the lineup isn’t the answer: ”He needs to score a goal and he will not score if he’s out. So I try to manage that during games. He needs to score one. That’s all a striker needs.”
THE WIDER STRUGGLES AT UNITED
United’s scoring troubles go beyond Højlund. The team has 15 league defeats—their worst run since the 1989-90 season. United are in 14th position in the Premier League. Amorim says missed chances are a team issue: ”We have several players that missed big chances, not just Rasmus… Our team should score more goals, it is not just Rasmus missing chances.” Due to this collective slump, United struggle to convert matches into points despite creating opportunities.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE RED DEVILS?
Manchester United face Bournemouth away from home next. Both teams desperately need points to avoid getting dragged deeper into the relegation battle. United are struggling in the league, and all their focus will shift into the Europa League clash they have next against Athletic Bilbao for a spot in the final. Amorim’s focus will be on boosting his squad’s confidence and efficiency in front of goal. Højlund will likely keep his place in the starting lineup in hopes of breaking his drought and helping United lift away from their lowest league position in decades.
