Manchester United Target Royal Antwerp’s Senne Lammens for Goalkeeper Reinforcement

Manchester United have made their first move to sign 23-year-old Royal Antwerp goalkeeper Senne Lammens. The club is looking at Lammens as a possible new addition, with the Belgian featuring prominently on their shortlist as they weigh options for summer transfer business.

WHAT HAPPENED?

The English club have contacted Royal Antwerp to understand the terms needed to sign Senne Lammens. United are looking to replace the backup option of Altay Bayindir and provide genuine competition for André Onana, who continues to be first-choice keeper. As per recent reports, Royal Antwerp want about £17million for Lammens, who has kept 12 clean sheets in over 50 appearances since joining the club in 2023. The 23-year-old has expressed interest in a move to the Premier League, considering it the right next step for career progression.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

United finished the Premier League season in 15th place, missing out on Champions League qualification and facing calls for squad upheaval. Onana played the most minutes this season, but he has not been consistent between the sticks and struggled in both the English top flight and in Europe. United have decided to explore options for new goalkeepers, and Lammens, who is known for his reflexes and potential to get better, could be a good candidate.

WHAT NEXT?

United are expected to continue negotiations with Antwerp in the coming weeks, and Lammens is reportedly interested in a move and very eager to test himself in English football. In case the deal does not materialise, United consider Argentina’s World Cup-winning goalkeeper Dibu Martinez as another option, but his transfer will be much costlier. United’s next match is a pre-season friendly against Milan as they prepare for the new campaign, hoping to close the gap to the top six. If United succeed in signing the Belgium international, he could get game time in these warm-up games, introducing himself to fans as their new goalkeeper.
