Marash Kumbulla Completes Loan Move to Mallorca from Roma

Mallorca have improved their defense by signing Marash Kumbulla on loan from AS Roma. They have the option to buy him for €8 million, with an additional €2 million in possible bonuses, as confirmed by a recent report that outlines the terms of the deal. The Albanian center-back returns to Spain for another season.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Kumbulla, 25, leaves Roma after spending the previous season on loan at Espanyol, where he made 30 league appearances and scored twice. Multiple reports confirm that Roma and Mallorca have agreed on a loan deal with an option to buy, although it is not obligatory. The medical examination was scheduled after both clubs finalized the terms over the weekend. Last season, Kumbulla was not a regular starter at Roma, making only 12 appearances before his loan to Espanyol. His strong performances in LaLiga attracted Mallorca’s attention. Roma, having signed Kumbulla in 2020 from Hellas Verona for €29.5 million, agreed to the move after the defender expressed his desire to return to Spain for regular playing time.

MALLORCA’S AMBITIONS AND KUMBULLA’S ROLE

Mallorca finished last season in 10th place, just below European places, and they aim to strengthen their defense after conceding 52 goals in 38 games. Kumbulla is expected to provide experience and physicality to a back line that struggled with injuries and inconsistency. His versatility to play in a back three or four makes him a valuable addition for head coach Javier Aguirre. Mallorca’s next match is against Celta de Vigo after losing their opener to Barcelona, the current La Liga title holders. The game is seen as critical for both teams as they seek a strong start and aim to avoid another relegation battle.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR PLAYER AND CLUB?

Kumbulla will likely compete with experienced defenders such as Antonio Raíllo and Martin Valjent for a starting position. There are high expectations for him to provide stability and leadership in defense. If he performs well, Mallorca could exercise the option to buy, making him a permanent addition to the team. For Roma, the deal creates space in their squad for new arrivals. Meanwhile, Mallorca will seek immediate improvements in their defense as they aim to climb the league table. Their upcoming match against Celta presents an opportunity for Kumbulla to make an impact and help Mallorca avoid another challenging season near the relegation zone.
