Marc Bernal Signs New Barcelona Contract Through 2029

Marc Bernal has signed a new long-term contract with Barcelona. The deal keeps the young midfielder at the club until June 2029. Bernal’s new contract shows the club’s trust in his future after a tough time in his early career.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Barcelona announced on Monday that Bernal, born in 2007, has extended his contract for four more years. Bernal spent more than a year recovering from a serious knee injury. He got hurt in August 2024, just ten days after his debut with the first team. In the 2023/24 season, Bernal made 31 appearances for Barça Atlètic, starting in 27 matches and scoring twice. But an ACL injury stopped his progress.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Bernal is seen as one of La Masia’s most talented midfielders in recent years. Before his injury, he was known for his tactical intelligence and defensive skills. He quickly became important to the Barça Atlètic squad. Barcelona extended his contract during his rehab, which shows their belief in his ability to return and play a key role in the future. This renewal is part of the club’s sporting director Deco’s plan to secure young talents for the coming years. As per reports, Marc Bernal is ready to rejoin the Barcelona squad after 382 days out, having received full medical clearance.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR BERNAL AND BARÇA?

Bernal aims to step up his recovery and return to full fitness in the 2025/26 season. Barcelona is currently first in La Liga, trying to increas the gap with  Real Madrid, who are one point behind after losing to Atletico de Madrid over the weekend. Their next game is an important home match against PSG for the Champions League and then Sevilla, as both teams fight for European spots. Bernal’s return could strengthen Barcelona’s midfield depth as they face tough matches and work to improve their standing in the league, especially with Barcelona relying on young talents like Marc Bernal to fill the gap in midfield due to multiple injuries.
