Marc Guehi Responds After Last-Minute Collapse of Liverpool Transfer
Marc Guehi speaks out after his transfer to Liverpool collapsed at the last moment. He makes it clear he is still committed to Crystal Palace.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Marc Guehi almost moved to Liverpool, but the transfer fell apart at the last moment. Regarding the collapsed move, the defender said, “I don’t have much to say, to be honest…I’m focused on playing football and playing for Palace.” He thanked the team’s supporters, adding, “I definitely feel it” when asked about their support. It’s believed the transfer broke down due to fee disagreements, as Crystal Palace withdrew approval for Guehi’s departure after failing to secure a replacement in time. Guehi will now stay and continue playing for the Eagles under manager John Collins.
WHAT WAS SAID?
“I don’t have much to say, to be honest,” he said after the victory. “I don’t read into too much (speculation). I focus on my football. I focus on my day-to-day life and I’m just enjoying playing for Palace. [The internet] is a funny place, that’s why I stay connected to people who have been with me through this whole process, this whole journey. I try and just keep my focus day to day. I have no complaints. I’m grateful for the opportunities that I’ve been given over the years. Yes, I believe I got here on some luck, but also because I work really hard. I’m always focused on what I’m doing in the present moment, that’s all I can do.”
PALACE AND GUEHI: SEASON SO FAR
Crystal Palace have relied on Guehi’s defensive leadership in the first months of the Premier League season. He has made 8 appearances and already contributed 2 assists from defence. Palace currently sits in an impressive 3rd place, having earned 12 points from 7 matches. They trail second-place Arsenal by one point and current champions Liverpool, whom they have beaten last weekend, by three points. Guehi has featured in every game and has been pivotal in Palace’s strong start to the season, with recent performances earning him praise for his consistency and composure under pressure.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Guehi was viewed as a potential longer-term replacement for Virgil Van Dijk at Liverpool, but the failure of the transfer might allow Arne Slot’s other centre-backs another opportunity to impress. Now Guehi remains a key player at Palace, who have shown signs of being able to compete for a place in the Premier League top half.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR PALACE AND LIVERPOOL?
Palace have just beaten Dinamo Kyiv for the Conference League and will now be playing Everton for the Premier League before the international break, where a win could see them jump to the top of the table. Liverpool, meanwhile, will turn their attention to a blockbuster clash against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. This comes after the Reds recently suffered their first defeat of the season against Crystal Palace, marking a significant moment in the current campaign.
