Marc Guiu Completes Sunderland Medical As Loan Move Nears Completion

Young forward Marc Guiu has finished his medical at Sunderland. He’s getting closer to sealing a season-long loan from Chelsea with no option to buy, as reported recently.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Marc Guiu, a 19-year-old Spanish striker, has had a medical with Sunderland. This is before a loan transfer from Chelsea that’s likely to be finalized today. The deal is a straight loan for the 2025/26 season, and Sunderland can’t buy him permanently. Chelsea included a rule that Sunderland must pay a penalty if Guiu doesn’t play enough matches. This makes him Sunderland’s ninth new player this summer as they strengthen for the Premier League, following their promotion after winning the 2024 Championship play-offs.

GUIU AND SUNDERLAND: THIS SEASON’S CHALLENGE

Marc Guiu did well in European matches last year, scoring six goals in seven Europa Conference League games. However, he played only three Premier League games for Chelsea. Sunderland, promoted to the Premier League, aim to build a team to survive at the top level. Guiu will compete with Wilson Isidor and Eliezer Mayenda for a spot in the starting lineup at the Stadium of Light. They start their league campaign this weekend against Crystal Palace.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR GUIU AND SUNDERLAND?

Guiu’s move is expected to be announced today. This allows him to train before Sunderland’s first match. Consistent playing time is important for him, with Chelsea’s penalty clause ensuring that Sunderland must play him regularly. Sunderland fans hope to see him make a quick impact and help the club compete in the Premier League this season, as they aim to avoid relegation and strengthen their squad after years away.
