Marc Guiu Joins Sunderland on Season-Long Loan from Chelsea
Marc Guiu has moved to Sunderland from Chelsea on loan for the 2025-26 season. The newly promoted Premier League side will pay the 19-year-old forward’s salary in full but do not possess the option to make his stay permanent, as confirmed by reports.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Sunderland have signed Guiu on loan for the season. The 19-year-old has been on Chelsea’s books since the summer of 2024, when he joined in a £5 million transfer from Barcelona. While he enjoyed success in the Europa Conference League, the forward could not make a similar impact in the Premier League last season, netting just one goal in six appearances. However, Chelsea believe he remains an important player for the future and, hence, there is no option to buy on the loan deal, as noted in a previous update.
WHY SUNDERLAND NEED GUIU
Sunderland won the 2024 Championship play-offs to seal promotion to the top flight of English football for the 2025-26 season. Their top scorer in all competitions last term was Wilson Isidor, who bagged 13 goals in 42 appearances, while Eliezer Mayenda scored nine times in 38 matches. Therefore, Sunderland have been on the lookout for more firepower to survive the drop and have identified Guiu as a high-quality player who can boost their attack. The club has been actively working to strengthen their squad following their promotion.
WHAT COMES NEXT?
Guiu is expected to play a key role in Sunderland’s fight for survival in the Premier League. Sunderland’s first match on their return to the competition will be against West Ham, which will be an important game as they aim to establish themselves in the league. Performing well in this opener could set Sunderland up well for the rest of the campaign.
