Mathis Amougou Completes Permanent Transfer To RC Strasbourg
Mathis Amougou has officially joined RC Strasbourg, leaving Chelsea just five months after arriving at the Premier League club. The French midfielder signed a five-year deal, and Chelsea kept a buy-back clause in the agreement.
According to a previous report, Chelsea included a buy-back clause in Mathis Amougou‘s transfer to Strasbourg.
WHAT HAPPENED?
RC Strasbourg announced they have signed 19-year-old Mathis Amougou permanently from Chelsea. The deal is reportedly worth €15 million and lasts until 2030. Amougou originally joined Chelsea from Saint-Étienne in January 2025, but he found limited opportunities in the first team. Now, he returns to Ligue 1, aiming to grow at Strasbourg, who have signed him for the long term.
According to a previous report, Mathis Amougou moved to Chelsea from Saint-Étienne in February 2025 for around €15 million.
Chelsea included a buy-back clause, allowing them to bring back the promising midfielder if he performs well in France.
STRASBOURG’S PLANS AND AMOUGOU’S ROLE
Amougou joins RC Strasbourg at an important time for the club. Strasbourg finished last season 7th in Ligue 1, just missing on Europa League qualification.
According to previous reports, Strasbourg finished 7th place in Ligue 1 last season and will compete in the Europa Conference League next season.
The team struggled with consistency and is looking to add young talent this summer. Amougou is expected to compete for a starting role in midfield, offering energy and technical ability. Last season, he mainly played for Chelsea’s U21 team, but his performances for France’s U20 national team caught the attention of scouts across Europe.
According to previous reports, Mathis Amougou played just two games for Chelsea before making the move.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR CHELSEA AND STRASBOURG?
The move gives Amougou a chance to play regularly in Ligue 1. Strasbourg’s first game of the new season is against Metz, who will play Ligue 1 this season after gaining promotion from Ligue 2 last season. Strasbourg will want to start strong and climb the league table. Chelsea, meanwhile, will keep an eye on Amougou’s progress, ready to bring him back if he develops as expected. Both clubs aim to benefit from this strategic deal as the new season begins.
