Mathis Amougou Seals Permanent Move To Strasbourg From Chelsea
French midfielder Mathis Amougou has left Chelsea and joined Strasbourg for good. He signed a contract with the Ligue 1 team, which runs until June 2030. Chelsea made sure to include a clause in the deal that allows them to bring the 19-year-old back to Stamford Bridge in the future, showing they’re still interested in him despite his short stay in London.
TRANSFER DETAILS AND CLUB STRATEGY
Amougou moved to Chelsea from Saint-Etienne in February 2025 for around €15 million. But he made only two appearances for the Premier League club before this switch. Initially thought to be a loan move, the transfer became permanent as Chelsea wished to follow FIFA’s rule of having only three loanees per club. The move left space open for other young talents at Stamford Bridge. The decision also fits in with the general strategy of Chelsea’s owners, who are using Strasbourg to nurture young players within their portfolio.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR STRASBOURG
Strasbourg had a middle-of-the-road finish in Ligue 1 last season, finishing 7th place. Now under new manager Liam Rosenior, they expect Amougou to be a key player. With the departures of midfielders Habib Diarra and Andrey Santos, the teenager should get opportunities to play. Furthermore, Amougou will experience European football, as Strasbourg competes in the 2025-26 Europa Conference League.
Rehab of the squad is also taking place with the loan additions of Chelsea’s Kendry Paez and Mike Penders, plus the permanent signing of Ishe Samuels-Smith.
LOOKING AHEAD
The move gives Amougou the chance for more regular first-team action, important for his development. Meanwhile, Chelsea’s buy-back clause means they can recall the midfielder if he succeeds in France. Strasbourg’s domestic campaign starts next month as they await their Conference League opponent in the qualifying round. Both the French side’s good results and Amougou’s progress will closely be monitored by Chelsea and Strasbourg as the season unfolds.
