Miron Muslic Appointed as Schalke 04’s New Head Coach

FC Schalke 04 have named Miron Muslic as their new head coach. He will try to bring the club back to success in the Bundesliga after a tough season in Germany’s second division.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Muslic, who was at Plymouth Argyle, signed a deal with Schalke until June 30, 2027. The 42-year-old coach comes to Schalke after Plymouth’s relegation from the English Championship. Schalke paid a mid six-figure sum plus bonuses for him. In his first statement, Muslic thanked Schalke’s leaders for honest talks and shared their vision for the club’s future. He replaces Karel Geraerts in a team that finished 10th in the 2024/25 season.

MUSLIC’S BACKGROUND AND WHAT IT MEANS FOR SCHALKE

Muslic is known for his energetic, high-pressing style, similar to Jürgen Klopp. Though not well-known in Germany, he achieved European qualification with Belgium’s Cercle Brugge. His time at Plymouth Argyle ended in disappointment with the team’s relegation to League One. However, Schalke’s board believes his tactics could help the club. Muslic’s main goal is to bring Schalke back to the Bundesliga and play attractive football.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR SCHALKE?

With Muslic’s arrival, Schalke will focus on rebuilding during the summer transfer window. The team needs to strengthen and prepare for the tough 2025/26 2. Bundesliga season. Their first competitive game will likely be in early August when the new season starts. Schalke finished last season 17 points behind second-place Fortuna Düsseldorf and only six points above the relegation zone. Schalke hope Muslic can quickly implement his ideas and inspire the team towards promotion.
