Monchi Departs Aston Villa After Short Spell

Monchi has left Aston Villa. The football director is known for his work at Sevilla and AS Roma. But he will not be part of Villa’s journey in English football anymore.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Monchi joined Aston Villa in summer 2023 but has now left the club before September 2025 ends. The 57-year-old had big plans to help Villa compete at the top of the Premier League but has now departed. He will no longer guide the club’s future transfers or sporting strategy as Villa searches for a new leader in their football operations department.

MONCHI’S IMPACT AND VILLA’S SEASON

Monchi was brought in to build on Villa’s rise under manager Unai Emery, and now he will join Al-Ahli. Under his direction, Villa made several signings and did reach the Champions League for the first time in over four decades. However, Aston Villa had a poor start to the 2025/26 Premier League season, earning only one point from their first three games. As of now, Aston Villa are currently eighteenth in the Premier League table, struggling to find their footing. They are also seeking attacking players after losing key figures in the summer. Monchi played a role in shaping Villa’s summer signing policy, which was intended to bring in new quality, but the club must address their needs without his guidance. With players like Moussa Diaby and Marco Asensio making key contributions, Villa’s European adventure is now ongoing without Monchi, and the club would need to hire someone at the helm of the football department soon.

WHAT COMES NEXT FOR ASTON VILLA?

Aston Villa’s next fixture is at home to Bologna for the opening match of the Europa League, before resuming the Premier League against Fulham as they try to get their first win of the season.
