Nat Phillips Completes Permanent Transfer to West Bromwich Albion

Nat Phillips has left Liverpool to join West Bromwich Albion on a permanent deal, ending a nine-year spell at Anfield and signing a three-year contract with the Championship side.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Phillips, 28, moves to West Brom after spending most of his Liverpool career out on loan, with previous spells at Stuttgart, Bournemouth, Celtic, Cardiff, and Derby. Liverpool have agreed a £3 million fee with West Brom, including add-ons. Phillips had not played for the Liverpool first team since January 2023 and made a total of 29 appearances for the senior side. At West Brom, he reunites with new manager Ryan Mason, who is reshaping the squad for a promotion push. Phillips expressed his excitement to play regular football, stating he was eager to join as soon as he heard of the club’s interest.

According to a previous report we published, Liverpool were the Premier League champions after the 2024-2025 season.

WHY THIS MOVE MATTERS

Phillips was a dependable presence for Liverpool during injury crises, notably helping the club secure a third-place Premier League finish in 2021 when the team struggled with defensive injuries. Despite his contributions, he found his path to regular minutes blocked by players like Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konaté, Joe Gomez, and Jarell Quansah. His move to West Brom comes at a time when the club is looking to rebuild after finishing 5th in the 2024/25 Championship season and falling short in the play-off semi-finals. Phillips’ arrival is seen as a smart acquisition as West Brom aim to strengthen their defense and mount another promotion challenge.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR PHILLIPS AND WEST BROM?

Phillips will now join his new teammates for pre-season under Ryan Mason’s leadership. West Brom open their 2025/26 Championship campaign in early August against Hull City, who finished 10th last season. The Baggies, having ended last season eight points behind automatic promotion spots and three points clear of seventh-placed Norwich, will be eager to close that gap. With Phillips expected to be a key figure in defense, West Brom look to build a squad capable of returning to the Premier League.
