Nayef Aguerd Arrives in Marseille to Join OM Defense

Nayef Aguerd has arrived in Marseille to complete his move and sign as a new central defender for Olympique de Marseille (OM). The experienced Moroccan international is set to strengthen OM’s backline just as the Ligue 1 campaign gets underway.

WHAT HAPPENED?

After weeks of speculation and negotiations, Aguerd’s switch from West Ham United to Marseille is being finalized for a reported fee of around £20 million. Aguerd landed in Marseille on September 1 and is expected to undergo a medical before officially signing his contract. OM’s sporting advisor, Medhi Benatia, played a key role in convincing the 29-year-old to join. West Ham, meanwhile, are now searching for a replacement at centre back after Aguerd’s departure, as they need to bolster their squad following their poor start to the season.West Ham is currently last in the Premier League after consecutive losses.

WHAT IT MEANS FOR MARSEILLE

Marseille are hoping Aguerd’s arrival will bring much-needed experience and stability to their defensive line. The club has had an inconsistent start to the 2025/26 Ligue 1 season, currently sitting in mid-table with 3 points after three matches, six points already behind Lyon. Last season, OM struggled to keep clean sheets, and defense has been a clear priority for the summer. Marseille finished last season in 2nd place, qualifying for the Champions League group stage, which highlights the importance of strengthening their backline with Aguerd’s Premier League and European experience.

WHAT NEXT FOR AGUERD AND OM?

Aguerd is expected to be registered quickly so he can be available for Marseille’s next game against Lorient on September 14th. Lorient are level on points, but below on goal difference in Ligue 1, making it a crucial test for OM’s new signing. OM will hope Aguerd’s leadership and defensive skills will help them climb the table and secure a European spot by the end of the season. For West Ham, who won their first match in the Premier League after three matches, the search for Aguerd’s replacement continues before the transfer window closes.
