Nemanja Matić Agrees to Join Sassuolo in Serie A on One-Year Deal

Nemanja Matić, the Serbian midfielder, has agreed to join Sassuolo. He’s signed a one-year contract, with a possible second year. After leaving Lyon, his move is important for Sassuolo, who are back in Serie A and need experienced players to help their midfield.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Sassuolo, newly promoted to Serie A this season, have signed 37-year-old Nemanja Matić. The experienced midfielder ended his contract with Lyon just last week after only 18 months at the French club. Due to financial troubles, his departure was necessary. Matić, who previously played for Manchester United and AS Roma, held positive talks with Sassuolo’s coach Fabio Grosso and CEO Giovanni Carnevali in recent days. He was attracted by the opportunity to return to Italy and play an important role on and off the pitch, especially in helping young players in the squad.

SASSUOLO AND MATIĆ: THE WIDER CONTEXT

Sassuolo’s promotion to Serie A has changed their ambition and strategy, making it crucial to sign players who can offer top-level experience. The club finished as champions in Serie B last season and starts the 2025-26 Serie A campaign with aims of staying up and surprising bigger teams. Matić’s last Serie A stint was with AS Roma, where he made 50 appearances and was lauded for his game control and leadership. Until his departure, he featured 32 times for Lyon last season, providing 2 assists and regularly anchoring the midfield. Sassuolo now hopes for his presence to better compete in a league renowned for its tactical battles and young talent development.

LOOKING AHEAD: SASSUOLO’S UPCOMING CHALLENGES

Sassuolo’s next task is a challenging away game against Napoli, the current champions. With both sides eager to start afresh strongly, this will be a test for Sassuolo’s renovated squad. Napoli are one of the main title contenders this season, despite missing Lukaku by injury and will be a tough opening test for the team. For Matić, the coming weeks will be about rebuilding fitness and providing experience to a new team fighting to avoid the dangers of relegation.
