Neymar Reveals He Nearly Joined Fluminense for Club World Cup

Neymar Jr. said he almost joined Fluminense for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. In the end, he decided to stay with Santos to recover his fitness.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Neymar explained that talks with Fluminense were serious. The plan was for a short-term deal for the Club World Cup in the United States. This would mean Neymar leaving Santos temporarily. Fluminense wanted to strengthen their team after qualifying as 2023 Copa Libertadores champions. Fluminense’s president said there were direct talks, involving Neymar’s close friend Renato Gaúcho and even conversations with Neymar’s father. After a FaceTime call, Neymar turned down the offer. He preferred to use the break in the Brazilian league to work on his recovery and get back to full fitness before any move.

LATEST ON NEYMAR AND TEAM FORM

Neymar returned to Santos in January 2025 after an injury-hit period in Saudi Arabia. His current deal with Santos lasts until the end of June. He has struggled to make an impact due to fitness issues, missing several matches as he tries to regain form. Santos are also having a tough season, sitting mid-table in Brazil’s Série A, six points off a Copa Libertadores qualifying spot and only four points above the relegation zone. Meanwhile, Fluminense have had a better season, competing for another continental title and preparing to represent Brazil at the Club World Cup this summer.

WHAT COMES NEXT?

Neymar’s main goal is to fully recover and return to top-level play with Santos. Talks about his future, including possible transfers to Europe or extending with Santos, are ongoing, with his father saying there is interest from Champions League clubs. Santos’ next match is an important league game against Grêmio, another team trying to move up the table. Santos are just below the top half, needing points to catch up to sixth-placed Internacional. Neymar wants to stay fit and play regularly, hoping this will help him get back to his best form—and perhaps secure a major move before the 2026 World Cup.
