Nick Woltemade Scores Dream Debut Goal for Newcastle United
Nick Woltemade made a great start to his Newcastle career. The German striker scored just hours after joining the club. He netted the opening goal against Wolverhampton Wanderers at St. James’ Park in his first Premier League match.
WHAT HAPPENED ON WOLTERMADE’S DEBUT?
Woltemade joined Newcastle in the final two days of the summer transfer window for a club-record fee of €85 million from VfB Stuttgart. He was given an immediate debut just before the half-hour mark against Wolves. Woltemade rose above defenders and powered a header from Jacob Murphy’s cross into the net, putting Newcastle 1-0 ahead and sending the home crowd wild. This debut showed why Newcastle were so keen to sign him before the deadline.
NEWCASTLE’S SEASON SO FAR AND WOLTERMADE’S ARRIVAL
Newcastle have experienced a mixed start to the campaign. They entered the Wolves game 18th in the standings, having struggled in front of goal with injury problems. The Magpies are currently 9th after yesterday’s win and will try and keep the positive momentum for the mid-week match when they host Barcelona for their Champions League opener. Woltemade arrives after a breakout season at Stuttgart, where he scored 17 goals and helped the German side win the DFB-Pokal. As the Bundesliga Newcomer of the Year, he brings scoring power and confidence from a strong year in Germany.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR NEWCASTLE AND WOLTERMADE?
Newcastle’s next test is a trip to Bournemouth, who are in the leading group with nine points from four matches after the opening day’s loss at Anfield. A win would see the Magpies leapfrog their rivals and close the gap to the European places. Woltemade will need to maintain his momentum as he adapts to British football. Newcastle fans are hopeful his debut goal will lead to many more in the coming seasons.
