Nico González Seals Move to Atlético Madrid on Loan With Buy Option
Nico González is set to join Atlético Madrid from Juventus on initial loan. The deal includes an option to buy for €33 million if he plays enough games, with the loan deal potentially becoming permanent depending on his appearances.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Atlético Madrid and Juventus have agreed to send the Argentine winger to Spain for the 2025-26 season. It’s a loan at first, but Atlético must buy him if he plays a certain number of games. Juventus wanted to sell González after a mixed season, as they need to sell him before they can sign Edon Zhegrova, so they agreed to the deal as the transfer window closed. La Liga needs to approve the move, but that should happen soon.
WHY ATLÉTICO MADE THE MOVE
González didn’t play his best at Juventus. He appeared in 24 Serie A matches, contributing four goals and three assists, which reflects a lackluster season. Atlético need a good winger for coach Diego Simeone’s attack. They think González’s speed and creativity will help the team, especially after losing Rodrigo De Paul to MLS. While new players like Thiago Almada and others provide options, Atlético are looking for more wing play to enhance their attack.
WHAT NEXT FOR ATHLETICO AND JUVENTUS?
Atlético Madrid finished third in La Liga last season, conceding 43 goals and securing a Champions League berth. They hope González can help them catch up to the top teams. Their next league game is against Villarreal, who have seven points from three matches, as opposed to Atletico’s only 2 points so far. González will compete for a spot on the wing, likely playing on the left while Simeone plays on the right. Juventus want the sale money for a late move to strengthen their squad as they aim to close the gap to rivals Napoli and Inter this season.
