Nicola Zalewski Completes €17M Transfer To Atalanta

Nicola Zalewski is joining Atalanta for €17 million. The Polish wing-back, after a brief time at Inter, will now become part of Ivan Juric’s squad.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Atalanta and Inter have agreed on the transfer of Nicola Zalewski. He will soon have his medical check with Atalanta. The 23-year-old joined Inter from Roma earlier this summer, with Inter paying €7 million for him in June. This quick sale means Inter made a €10 million profit in just over a season. Zalewski will sign a four-year deal, with a two-year option, at Atalanta.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Zalewski’s move comes as Atalanta seeks to strengthen their left side after missing out on Robin Gosens. Last season, Atalanta finished 3rd in Serie A, qualifying for the Champions League, and they aim to improve on that performance by breaking into the top two. In contrast, Inter finished as Serie A runner-ups, losing the title to Napoli by 2 points last season. Zalewski played mainly as a backup during the second half of the season, making 15 appearances, scoring once, and assisting twice. His speed and creativity from the left flank are qualities Atalanta hope will lift them up the table.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR ATALANTA AND INTER?

Zalewski will join Atalanta before their opening Serie A game against Pisa. Atalanta hope to improve on last year’s 3rd place finish. Pisa is back into the Serie A after gaining promotion last year, making this an important test for Juric’s new side. Inter, meanwhile, will soon start their title chase with more money to spend on new players, aiming to keep ahead of Napoli this time around. For Zalewski, the move offers a fresh start and a chance to play regularly in a team eager to climb even higher in Serie A.
