Real Betis is close to bringing back Pau Lopez as their new goalkeeper. The Spanish player is almost done with his move from Toluca, waiting for the final steps to complete the deal.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Pau Lopez plays in Mexico with Toluca. He has agreed to return to Real Betis. Toluca is ready to end Lopez’s contract, allowing the 30-year-old to return to La Liga. Lopez played for Betis in the 2018-2019 season, so he knows the club well. After difficult times with loans at Girona and Marseille, he got consistent play at Toluca in 2025. He appeared in 11 matches and regained his form. Betis acted quickly to sign him, beating interest from Villarreal to make Lopez a key part of their team for the new season.

His leadership and past success at Betis could strengthen the defense. It might help the team close the gap with those above them in the standings.

LOOKING AHEAD: WHAT’S NEXT?

The next step is to officially end Lopez’s contract with Toluca. Betis will sign him. Once done, he is expected to join their pre-season training. Real Betis will start the 2025-26 La Liga season against Elche, a team that gained promotion from La Liga 2. Betis wants to return to European competition. Improving the goalkeeping under new manager Ruben Baraja is crucial. They’re aiming to climb the table and challenge rivals including the historical top-3 of La Liga, Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid and, especially, league winners Barcelona.
