Pep Guardiola hit out at the Manchester United fans who insulted Phil Foden’s mother during Manchester City’s Premier League clash at Old Trafford.
WHAT HAPPENED?
After a goal-less draw between the two Manchester teams at Old Trafford last sunday, some home fans directed derogatory chants toward City star Phil Foden’s mother. Pep Guardiola expressed his outrage at the behavior during the post-match conference.
WHAT PEP GUARDIOLA SAID
Speaking about the chants, Guardiola said, “[A] lack of class. The champions don’t behave like that, I’m sorry to say. I don’t understand really the mind of the people involving the mum of Phil. As a mother, like a mother, it’s a lack of class, a lack of integrity, and they have to be ashamed. But anyway, it is what it is. We make better chants for them. I don’t know if it will be better or worse, but we will do it.”
THE BIGGER PICTURE
The derogatory chants aimed at Foden’s mother were part of broader concerns regarding fan behavior during the derby. Separate controversies arose as reports surfaced that portions of the visitors’ stands were vandalized with graffiti after the match. A design decision made two years ago to incorporate Manchester City colors into a section of these stands has occasionally triggered similar incidents involving traveling fans.
WHAT NEXT FOR MANCHESTER CITY?
Pep Guardiola’s team will host Crystal Palace next week in the Premier League as they continue their push for a top-four finish. They are cuttenly 5th, one point behind Chelsea, and one and two points ahead of Aston Villa and Newcastle, with the magpies with 2 games at hand.
