Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique has responded strongly to questions about his team’s preparation for Arsenal’s set-pieces. This comes before their Champions League semi-final first leg.

WHAT HAPPENED?

At Monday’s pre-match press conference, Luis Enrique was asked about PSG’s weakness in defending set-pieces. Arsenal is strong in this area. The Spanish coach replied: “We’ve worked on all the important aspects of the game.” He added sharply, “Or do you think I’m sitting here because they gave me a coaching license?”

His response shows his frustration with negativity around his team, despite a successful season. PSG have already won their fourth straight Ligue 1 title. They are close to reaching their first Champions League final since 2020.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Luis Enrique’s words reflect his belief that criticism from the French media is unfair. At the same press conference, he said: “No one is talking about the goals or the games we’ve won.” Instead, he noted: “Let’s talk about our defeats, that’s fine. Our mindset is wonderful.”

PSG’s problem with set-pieces is clear. They have let in 10 goals from set-pieces in Ligue 1 this season. That’s 32% of all their goals conceded, the most in the division. Meanwhile, Arsenal are one of the best in Europe from set-pieces under Mikel Arteta. Since last season began, they have scored more Premier League goals from set-pieces than any other team.

SET-PIECE SHOWDOWN

The focus on set-pieces comes after Luis Enrique seemed to downplay their importance. Recently, he said: “I don’t plan on working on set pieces because I’ve known Arsenal for a very long time.” He added: “The qualities and flaws that have brought us this far are the same.”

This shows his commitment to PSG’s style. He said: “We want to win every trophy by playing the way we play, by defending the way we do. No team is perfect, and we won’t be either.” This approach could be key in Tuesday’s game. Arsenal’s strength in set-pieces was shown in their quarter-final win over Real Madrid. Midfielder Declan Rice scored twice from free-kicks.

WHAT NEXT FOR PSG?

Tuesday’s first leg at Emirates Stadium is a big chance for PSG to move towards winning in Europe. PSG will seek revenge after Arsenal beat them 2-0 in the group stage in October.

Even though he is frustrated with the media, Luis Enrique is confident in his team’s growth. He noted their increased maturity and calmness during the season. After Tuesday’s game in London, PSG will host Arsenal for the return leg in Paris on May 6. The winner will face Bayern Munich or Real Madrid in the Champions League final at Wembley Stadium on May 31.
