Rasmus Højlund Embraces Competition as Manchester United Pursue New Striker

Rasmus Højlund is ready to compete for his spot at Manchester United. Despite the club’s pursuit of a new striker, Højlund welcomes the challenge.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Manchester United aim to strengthen their squad with a new forward. RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko is their main target, as reports indicate Manchester United has contacted Sesko’s representatives to show interest in making him their leading striker. The signing could reduce Højlund’s playing time, but he remains unfazed.

“Competition is fine with me,” Højlund expressed. “It sharpens me! I’m more than ready. I’m feeling sharp, so I’m welcoming everything that comes. I think it’s good with competition and it only sharpens the team.”

In addition to potential new arrivals, Højlund also faces increased competition from Joshua Zirkzee. The expectation is on Højlund to step up and prove himself as a top striker.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Last season, Manchester United finished 15th in the Premier League, failing to secure a Champions League spot. Their attacking line struggled as Hojlund and Zirkzee combined for just seven league goals. Højlund, who was recruited in 2023, managed six goals and two assists in 33 appearances last season. Head coach Ruben Amorim’s leadership faltered, prompting pressure to enhance both the attack and the team’s overall performance.

Meanwhile, Sesko scored 21 goals and provided six assists for Leipzig last season, explaining United’s eagerness to bring him in. However, Newcastle United are also in the race, making the market highly competitive especially as Eddie Howe’s team is playing in the Champions League.

WHAT NEXT?

Manchester United will conclude their pre-season tour in the United States with a match against Everton on Saturday night. The team’s next hope for a trophy is the season-opening match where they face Arsenal wo are last season’s runner-ups.

Should United sign a new striker like Sesko, it will be crucial for Højlund to perform. Otherwise, the 22-year-old could attract interest from Serie A sides such as Napoli and Juventus in the market. Both Højlund and the club faithful now wait to see how the manager will line up his side for the opening fixture and if Højlund continues to be a part of their plans.
