Rasmus Højlund Set for Loan Exit After Fiorentina Snub

Manchester United striker Rasmus Højlund was left out of the squad during their final pre-season friendly against Fiorentina, posing questions about the 23-year-old’s future at the club.

WHAT HAPPENED?

The Denmark international was strongly linked with a move to OGC Nice in January 2025 but decided to fight for his place at Old Trafford under new coach Ruben Amorim. However, after being an unused substitute against Fiorentina, Højlund is now considering other options such as AC Milan, with reports indicating that the Italian side is growing increasingly optimistic about securing Højlund in a loan deal with a £55m option to buy according to recent updates.

THE BIGGER PICTURE…

Højlund’s omission against Fiorentina was made even more significant by the fact that Amorim called on youth players Hugo Murillo and Zak Sargeant in the game against the Italian side. Despite Amorim insisting that Højlund remains part of his plans, the Dane could find himself battling for starts next season should United secure the signing of Benjamin Šeško from RB Leipzig, as negotiations around a transfer fee appear to be progressing according to reports.

Last season, Højlund managed to score just six goals and provide two assists in 33 appearances, which has led to discussions over his potential loan exit as indicated by various sources.

WHAT NEXT FOR RASMUS HØJLUND?

After the heightened competition for places at Manchester United, Højlund will want to play regular football in 2025-26, especially as Denmark is on track to secure their place at World Cup XXI in Mexico, USA and Canada next summer. Given his recent benching for United’s last Premier League match of the season against Arsenal, he may opt to end his stint in Manchester and explore opportunities elsewhere in Europe.
