Rasmus Højlund’s Future in Doubt as Manchester United Hold Talks Amidst AC Milan Interest

Rasmus Højlund could be on his way out of Manchester United if the club succeeds in completing a deal to sign Benjamin Šeško.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Højlund has slipped down the pecking order at Old Trafford following a poor debut season at the club, where he managed six goals and two assists in 33 appearances. With Šeško potentially joining United, his situation may become even more precarious. United have been linked with the RB Leipzig star for weeks, and recent reports suggest they are close to signing him for a fee that may reach up to £73 million ($92m) as negotiations continue for his transfer fee with Leipzig. This could signal the end for Højlund at Old Trafford, especially as AC Milan are growing increasingly optimistic about securing him in a loan deal with a £55m ($69m) option to buy.

WHAT ELSE HAPPENED?

Šeško stated earlier in the summer that he would not be returning to Leipzig for the 2025/26 season after a verbal agreement was reached between him and the club. Both Spanish sides Barcelona and Real Madrid, as well as Newcastle were reportedly interested in signing the forward; however, they have been left disappointed as Šeško seems poised to move to Old Trafford.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Milan have already bolstered their attack by signing Santiago Gimenez ahead of the upcoming campaign and are seeking to add more firepower before the window closes. They have been linked with Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze, though that appears to be a target for next summer. While a move for Borussia Dortmund’s Karim Adeyemi seems unlikely, they are now focusing on Højlund, who previously played in Serie A with Atalanta.

WHAT NEXT FOR MANCHESTER UNITED?

United will begin their 2025/26 campaign against last season’s runner-ups Arsenal, and they remain keen to complete the Šeško deal while determining Højlund’s future. The team finished 15th in the Premier League last season and hopes for significant improvement this time, especially after adding key signings.
