Rasmus Højlund’s Future in Doubt as Manchester United Prepare for Arsenal Clash

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim says Rasmus Højlund is still an option for their opening match against Arsenal. This is despite speculation about Højlund’s future at Old Trafford.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Amorim spoke to the media before United’s first Premier League game. He said, “He is one more option for tomorrow. We will see and Rasmus is still our player.” This follows weeks of transfer rumours linking Højlund with possible moves to AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund. Højlund struggled last season, scoring just six goals and two assists in 33 appearances. United have already signed Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Šeško, and Bryan Mbeumo to strengthen their attack. Amorim’s comments suggest there is room for change, but that Højlund remains a United player for now.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Manchester United are keen to move on from a difficult 2024-25 season, in which they finished 15th with only 44 goals scored. Amorim was appointed to oversee a major rebuild and has added new attacking options. The arrival of Sesko, who cost £73 million and has a reputation for reliable finishing, puts extra pressure on Højlund. Milan are still reportedly pushing for Højlund, but talks are ongoing. United could prefer a loan deal if a permanent move cannot be agreed. Meanwhile, Dortmund are considering a move for depth, not as a guaranteed starter. Højlund himself is “open” to a move but is ready to fight for his place in the squad.

WHAT’S NEXT?

United open their season against Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday. Arsenal finished second last season and will provide a stern test, while United need a result to lift spirits after last year’s disappointing finish. Amorim is expected to rotate his forwards, with Sesko possibly starting. Højlund could feature, depending on his future status and tactical needs. United are a work in progress, and any Højlund transfer could happen before the window closes. For now, he remains a Red Devil and part of the squad facing Arsenal. The team aims to climb the table and challenge for a top-four finish.
