Real Madrid Ready to Sign Álvaro Carreras After Benfica’s Last Game

Álvaro Carreras could play his last match for Benfica today as Real Madrid plan to make an offer for him soon. The Spanish club has been watching the 22-year-old left-back for months and is eager to start talks once Benfica’s season ends.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Real Madrid and Carreras have agreed on personal terms. Carreras will sign a five-year deal until 2028, earning about €9 million a year. Real Madrid now needs to finalize the transfer fee with Benfica. They hope to pay less than his €50 million release clause. Carreras has been impressive for Benfica this season, playing 49 games and scoring four goals with five assists.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Carreras is Real Madrid’s third defensive addition this summer, after Dean Huijsen and Trent Alexander-Arnold. The left-back spot has been a weak point for Madrid, with Ferland Mendy struggling to perform well. New manager Xabi Alonso, who will replace Carlo Ancelotti, supports the Carreras signing. Alonso believes Carreras is perfect for his style due to his strong passing, ball control, and work rate.

MANCHESTER UNITED CONNECTION

Manchester United could profit from the deal. Benfica bought Carreras from United for €6 million last year, and United has a buy-back option for €18 million. However, United is not planning to use this clause but may receive some money from the sale to Real Madrid. Madrid thought about asking United to use their buy-back option to get Carreras at a better price, but they decided to deal directly with Benfica.

WHAT NEXT FOR REAL MADRID?

Real Madrid is forming a strong squad to compete in La Liga and the expanded Club World Cup with Xabi Alonso in charge. Their focus on defence shows their commitment to improving the team. With Alexander-Arnold, Huijsen, and likely Carreras joining, Madrid’s defence will look very different next season. The Carreras deal is expected to move fast after Benfica’s last match today, with official talks to follow soon.
