Real Madrid Set to Decide on Nico Paz Buy-Back This Week

This week, Real Madrid will decide whether to use the buy-back option for Nico Paz. He has done well in his first season at Como, coached by Cesc Fabregas.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Real Madrid will tell Como and Nico Paz if they will activate the buy-back clause in his deal. The 20-year-old Argentine player joined Como last summer for about €6 million. Real Madrid included some favorable clauses in the agreement. They can bring Paz back for €8 million this summer. This amount increases to €9 million in 2026 and €10 million in 2027. Additionally, Madrid has a 50% sell-on clause if Como sells him elsewhere.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Nico Paz has been excellent for newly-promoted Como this season. He has scored six goals and provided nine assists in Serie A. These performances have made many top clubs notice him, including Champions League finalists Inter Milan. They reportedly see him as a potential long-term replacement for veteran midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan. Incoming Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso is reportedly involved in the decision-making process and wants to bring Paz back to the Bernabeu immediately.

Reports suggest that Alonso wants to speak directly with the player and his representatives, possibly in a meeting this week. He wants to exercise the €8 million buy-back clause before the FIFA Club World Cup, which starts on June 15.

WHAT NEXT FOR REAL MADRID?

If Real Madrid activates the buy-back clause, Paz will likely join the team for pre-season training. During this period, a final decision on his role within the squad will be determined. The club seems to be reclaiming talented academy players. Reports state they are also considering activating a similar clause for Miguel Gutierrez, who is currently at Girona.

Como, meanwhile, seems to be fighting to retain full rights to Paz. Reports indicate they’re prepared to offer between €15-20 million to convince Real Madrid to permanently relinquish control. With Alonso set to lead Real Madrid into the new season after a successful La Liga campaign, reinforcing the midfield with young players like Paz could help maintain their domestic dominance and prepare for another Champions League challenge.
