Real Madrid’s Defensive Shortlist Revealed: Huijsen, Saliba, and Konaté Main Targets

Real Madrid have identified Dean Huijsen, William Saliba, and Ibrahima Konaté as defensive targets for next season. They are looking for young talent as their current defenders are nearing the end of their careers.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Real Madrid have three main defensive targets for the upcoming transfer window. Dean Huijsen of Bournemouth, who has a £50 million release clause, wants to join the Spanish champions and is waiting for an official move from them. Chelsea and Liverpool are also interested in signing the 19-year-old. Arsenal‘s William Saliba is considered a dream target, but he is currently too expensive. Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konaté is also on the shortlist.

THE BIG PICTURE

Real Madrid’s interest in defensive reinforcements comes at a critical time for the club as veterans such as Antonio Rüdiger (32), David Alaba (32), and Dani Carvajal (33) are reaching the latter stages of their careers. The Spanish giants see Huijsen as a future star and are keeping tabs on him despite their interest in Saliba and Konaté.

Madrid have been monitoring Huijsen since before he started his professional career with Juventus and have appreciated his dynamism, playing ability, and height. The Spanish international has impressed in his first Premier League season with Bournemouth, scoring key goals against the likes of Tottenham and Manchester United and establishing himself as a mainstay in the starting line-up.

The club are coming off a disappointing season, and club president Florentino Perez has already indicated he will let manager Carlo Ancelotti leave to take over as Brazil boss at the end of the season. Bild claimed Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso is set to take over at the Bernabeu and has identified Leverkusen centre-back Jonathan Tah as one of his primary targets.

WHAT REAL MADRID HAVE SAID

According to Defensa Central, Alonso’s interest in Tah may add another name to Madrid’s defensive shortlist. As Alonso will already have a history with the 28-year-old, he is likely to prioritise him over other defenders.

If Los Blancos cannot sign Huijsen, Saliba, or Konaté in the summer, they could later turn to Alonso’s preferred player. Hence, Alonso’s appointment as manager will have a key role in deciding Madrid’s pastures new.
