Rennes and Sporting Director Frederic Massara Part Ways After Only 11 Months

Rennes have announced the immediate departure of Frederic Massara as sporting director. His time at the club ends after less than a full season.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Frederic Massara, who became Rennes‘ sporting director in July 2024, has left the club. This move was a mutual decision. The Italian executive is known for his work at Roma and AC Milan. He was responsible for the club’s sporting strategy and youth development during his time in Brittany. His departure is part of a leadership shake-up at Rennes, right after the Ligue 1 season ended.

SEASON CONTEXT AND MASSARA’S IMPACT

Massara joined Rennes during a period of front-office changes. The club wanted long-term growth after previous technical director Florian Maurice went to Nice. Massara was expected to keep Rennes competitive and develop their strong youth academy. Rennes had a mixed season, finishing in mid-table. They struggled with consistency and didn’t meet fan hopes for European qualification. Despite Massara’s key signings and promoting academy talents, the results didn’t meet the club’s goals.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR RENNES?

After Massara’s exit, Rennes will look for a new sporting director to handle their strategy and transfer plans for next season. With no official matches before pre-season, the club has time to appoint new leadership and strengthen the squad. Rennes aim to improve their mid-table finish and get closer to earning a spot in European competitions. Lyon and Lens, who finished just above Rennes this season, will likely be their main rivals for continental qualification next season.
