Richard Rios Set to Join Benfica After Palmeiras Deal

Benfica are close to signing Colombian midfielder Richard Rios from Palmeiras after weeks of negotiations. A report confirmed that Rios is expected in Lisbon next week to finalize his transfer and undergo a medical examination.

WHAT HAPPENED?

After interest from several European clubs, including Roma and Everton, Richard Rios has chosen to join Portuguese giants Benfica. The deal was completed by Benfica sports director Rui Pedro Braz during a mission to Brazil. A fee of €30 million was agreed and will be paid in three installments. Rios, who has impressed with his performances for Palmeiras, will bid farewell to the Brazilian club and start a new chapter in Europe. He will travel to Lisbon next week to complete his medical tests and sign his contract.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

The transfer of Rios signals Benfica’s determination to strengthen their squad for next season, especially with impending Champions League fixtures. Last season, Benfica finished second in the Portuguese Primeira Liga, just two points behind rivals Sporting CP. Their midfield needed fresh energy after a tough campaign. Rios, known for his tenacity and passing, scored seven goals and provided six assists in 2024 for Palmeiras, where he also helped win the state championship. He arrives after rejecting offers from Roma and Everton, drawn by Benfica’s top-level European ambitions.

WHAT NEXT FOR BENFICA AND RIOS?

Once Rios completes his medical, he will officially join Benfica’s first team and begin preparations for the upcoming season. Benfica’s first match is against Rio Ave in the Primeira Liga opener, with the club eager to close the gap to Sporting. Their Champions League campaign also starts next month, where they wait to see who their opponents will be. Palmeiras, meanwhile, will look to fill the void left by Rios’ departure as they try to stay at the top of the Brazilian Serie A. Fans will watch closely to see how quickly Rios adapts to top-tier European football and if he can meet expectations.
