Rodrigo Riquelme Completes Transfer to Real Betis After 15 Years at Atlético Madrid

Rodrigo Riquelme has officially joined Real Betis, ending his long journey with Atlético Madrid. The 25-year-old winger has signed a contract with Betis that runs until June 2030, signaling a new start in his career.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Real Betis signed Riquelme after agreeing to terms with Atlético Madrid. The fee is about €8-9 million for half of Riquelme’s rights. Atlético keeps the other half. Riquelme struggled for playing time last season at Atlético, where he made 16 La Liga appearances and added one goal and one assist across all competitions in 26 games. He replaces Jesús Rodriguez, who is moving to Como. Atlético could gain if Riquelme is sold later.

A previous report confirmed that Riquelme had limited playing opportunities due to fierce competition.

RIQUELME’S CHALLENGING SEASON AND BETIS’ REBUILD

Riquelme had few chances at Atlético last season. He was behind players like Samuel Lino and Conor Gallagher. Moving to Betis offers more playing time. Betis will compete in the Europa League next season after securing a place by finishing seventh in La Liga, confirming their spot for European competition.

Real Betis finished seventh in LaLiga last season, securing a place in the UEFA Conference League for next season.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR RIQUELME AND BETIS?

Riquelme will join Manuel Pellegrini’s squad for the new season and the Europa League. Betis play Elche first, who comes from the La Liga 2. Riquelme strengthens Betis’ wings. More transfers are likely, as Betis also want Manchester United’s Antony, but talks are tough.
