Roma Close In on Wesley After Reaching Player Agreement
Roma are moving fast to sign Flamengo right-back Wesley. They have agreed personal terms with the Brazilian defender. However, the Italian club’s first offer of €20 million was turned down. Talks are still ongoing as Flamengo want a higher fee.
According to a previous report, AS Roma are close to signing Wesley Franca.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Roma have made Wesley Franca a top priority for their defense ahead of the new season. The club has agreed a five-year contract with the 21-year-old, who has played 25 matches for Flamengo this season, scoring once and providing two assists. Wesley has also represented Brazil’s national team twice this year. While Roma’s first bid was €20 million, Flamengo are asking for €25 million, matching Zenit St. Petersburg’s offer. Wesley, however, has expressed his desire to move to Italy and rejected the Russian offer. Negotiations continue as Roma plan to complete the deal quickly to avoid the rival offers from Premier League teams and secure Wesley before their training camp begins.
A previous report confirmed that AS Roma are considering an offer of around €25 million for Wesley, which is below Flamengo’s asking price of €30 million.
WHY THIS TRANSFER MATTERS
Wesley is a key target for Roma, who want to strengthen their squad for the Serie A season ahead. Last season, Roma couldn’t qualify for the Champions League after finishing fifth in the league. The club’s new head coach Gian Piero Gasperini personally wants defensive reinforcements and considers Wesley a perfect fit for his style. The Giallorossi ended the previous campaign six points behind fourth-placed Juventus and are now looking to close down the gap with Italy’s top clubs.
A previous report reiterated that AS Roma finished fifth in Serie A last season.
Wesley’s position change and speed on the field could help Roma become more stable defensively and improve in attack as well.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR ROMA AND FLAMENGO?
Roma’s management is preparing more talks to reach an agreement with Flamengo and to avoid competing for Wesley’s services, with other European clubs entering the race. Flamengo are dealing with a difficult schedule in Brazil’s Série A, sitting third in the table, two points behind leaders Palmeiras. Roma are set to face Lyon in their next pre-season fixture on July 20, which could be a potential date for new signings to appear for the first time in the club’s jersey.
Signing Wesley early will help Roma build momentum in both domestic and European competitions in the 2025-26 season.
