Roma Set To Sign Wesley From Flamengo

AS Roma are about to complete the signing of Wesley Franca from Flamengo. The fee is €25 million plus extra payments. Only a few small details need to be finished before the transfer goes through.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Roma and Flamengo have been talking for weeks about the 21-year-old defender. Roma’s latest offer meets Flamengo’s price of €25 million plus bonuses. Wesley has already agreed to a contract with the Italian club until 2030. His reported salary is €2.5 million per year. Wesley did not play for Flamengo in their last game, which shows the club is getting ready to sell him to Roma. The transfer should be done once Flamengo find a replacement defender. They can’t bring in a foreign player right now because their spots are full.

WHY ROMA WANT WESLEY

Head coach Gian Piero Gasperini has made it a priority to sign Wesley. Gasperini wants to strengthen Roma’s right side of the defense. Wesley is good at both defending and attacking, which fits Gasperini’s plans. Roma are making changes to their team after finishing fifth in Serie A last season. They just missed out on a Champions League spot. Gasperini, who joined the club to improve their performance, believes Wesley can help Roma achieve their goals. Wesley played in 41 games for Flamengo this year. The team is currently third in the Brazilian Serie A standings, just four points behind leaders Palmeiras.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Once Flamengo find a replacement defender, the transfer will be officially announced. In the meantime, Roma are getting ready for the new Serie A season, which starts in mid-August. Their first game is against Bologna, who finished 9th last season. Roma are expected to aim for a top-four finish under Gasperini, with Wesley likely becoming a regular in the starting lineup. Meanwhile, Flamengo need to rebuild quickly. They aim to catch the league leaders and prepare for the Copa Libertadores knockout stages.
