Roma Target Evan Ferguson for Striker Role Amid Brighton Exit Talks

AS Roma are considering signing Brighton’s Evan Ferguson as they look for a new striker. The Italian club is talking to Brighton, who are open to letting the Irish forward leave after his struggles in the Premier League.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Roma have reached out to Brighton to discuss a move for Ferguson, who is one of the club’s candidates for their striker search. The 20-year-old was once seen as an up-and-coming talent but has struggled after a serious injury last season, netting just one goal in 21 league appearances. His loan spell at West Ham United was also unsuccessful, with Ferguson making eight appearances without scoring. Reports suggest Brighton are willing to sell the forward for around £25 million-£30 million or could consider a loan move. With his contract expiring in 2027 and Brighton ready to sell, a move is looking likely in the current transfer window.

WHY ROMA WANT FERGUSON

Roma, led by new coach Gian Piero Gasperini, are rebuilding their attack and are looking at players who fit Ferguson’s physical profile and potential from his early career. Despite a disappointing 2024/25 season – where Roma finished outside the Champions League spots

AS Roma finished the 2024/25 season with a top-five finish but will aim for a higher finish with Gasperini in charge of the team. The club believes Ferguson can replicate Tammy Abraham’s success after the latter’s move from Chelsea. Ferguson would provide serious competition for Artem Dovbyk, who was Roma’s top-scorer last season. Still just 20, Ferguson has already scored 13 goals in 60 Premier League appearances and was one of only four players in Premier League history to score a hat-trick before turning 19.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR ROMA AND FERGUSON?

Roma’s next match is a Europa League qualifier against Austria Wien. The team hopes to bring in new attacking options before their Serie A opener as they look to climb the table in 2025/26. Brighton, on the other hand, finished middle of the table in the Premier League last season and are set for a squad reboot under new manager Fabian Hürzeler. If the two clubs agree on a deal, Ferguson could soon follow in the footsteps of British strikers who have found success in Italy.
