Roma to Name Gasperini as New Coach

AS Roma are close to naming Gian Piero Gasperini as their new head coach. Right now, club management and the experienced Italian manager are in the final talks to complete the deal.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Roma‘s executives are meeting Gasperini today to finalize details of a likely three-year contract worth around €5 million per season, plus bonuses for performing well. The decisive meeting is to iron out the final details before signing the contracts. Club officials Florent Ghisolfi and Claudio Ranieri have traveled to Milan specifically to secure Gasperini’s commitment to the project.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

If he joins Roma, Gasperini will take a significant step in his career after nine successful years with Atalanta. He turned Atalanta from a team in danger of relegation to a regular contender for European competition. During his time in Bergamo, the 67-year-old led them to qualify for the Champions League and go on deep runs in European competitions. Roma’s interest in Gasperini increased after they found it difficult to negotiate with Como coach Cesc Fabregas.

Roma have struggled for consistency in Serie A this season. They are currently eighth in the table with 54 points, six behind Fiorentina and the final European qualification spot. With just two matches remaining, the Giallorossi are focusing on rebuilding for next season under new leadership.

WHAT NEXT FOR ROMA?

If everything goes as expected, Roma can officially announce the appointment of Gasperini either this weekend or early next week. Gasperini is also scheduled to meet Roma owner Dan Friedkin today before finalizing the deal. The appointment demonstrates Roma’s ambition to return to Serie A’s elite under a tactical manager.

The Giallorossi will face Empoli at Olimpico this Sunday in their penultimate Serie A match of the season before wrapping up their campaign away at Torino on June 8. Meanwhile, Gasperini is expected to begin planning a summer rebuild at Roma, with significant changes expected to the squad as he implements his distinctive tactical approach.
