Manchester United manager Rúben Amorim has made a point about the club’s transfer policy. He stressed that only players who want to be at United will be signed, even if they miss out on the Champions League.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Before a key stretch of games for United, Amorim addressed transfer speculation. There were reports about Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres potentially joining Old Trafford, but Amorim said there have been no direct talks with the player. Amorim stated, “If a player only wants to come to Manchester United to play Champions League, then he won’t come. We want players who want to represent United, not players who want to play certain competitions.” United want players who are committed to the club, not just European football.

WHY IT MATTERS

Manchester United are facing an uphill battle to get back into the Champions League as they have been inconsistent in the Premier League. The club currently sit in seventh place, behind the top four spots required for Europe’s top club competition. Their struggles have been evident in recent games, as they were held 2-2 by Bournemouth last time. United need squad improvements this summer, but Amorim wants long-term loyalty rather than short-term ambitions.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR UNITED?

United face a tricky Europa League semi-final against Athletic Bilbao, made even tougher by Amorim recently saying that even winning that trophy won’t “save” their poor season. Next in the league, the Red Devils will face Brentford, are also in the middle of the table. Amorim’s view on transfers may have an impact on United’s plans in the summer transfer window and may have a wider influence on their rebuild.
