Manchester United manager Rúben Amorim has announced a new approach for the rest of the season. He plans to give young academy players more chances in Premier League games while aiming to win the Europa League.
WHAT HAPPENED?
After defeating Lyon in the Europa League quarter-finals, Amorim decided to concentrate on the Europa League. He said, “We have to take a risk with the kids in the Premier League… we have to focus on the Europa League.” United are having their worst Premier League season in decades and are currently 13th in the table. They are unable to qualify for the Champions League through league position, so winning the Europa League is their only realistic chance to return to Europe’s top competition next season.
YOUTH TO THE FORE AS INJURIES BITE
Injuries have hit United’s squad hard, leading Amorim to promote academy players earlier than expected. Several young players have been included in recent match squads, and some may make their debuts soon. The U18 and U21 teams have been performing well, and Amorim sees this as an opportunity to give young players experience in the league while resting key players for important Europa League matches.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR UNITED?
United’s next match is a Premier League game against Wolves, with both teams close to the middle of the table, but very different recent form in the PL. The main focus for United will be the two-legged Europa League semi-final ties against Athletic Bilbao. Winning the Europa League would not only bring a trophy but also secure a place in the Champions League for the 2025-26 season, providing a boost for a potential rebuild under Amorim next year.
