Russell Martin Set to Become New Rangers Head Coach

Rangers are close to hiring Russell Martin as their new head coach. The former Southampton manager is ready to start a new chapter at Ibrox.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Rangers have been searching for a new coach after Philippe Clement left. They are now in final talks with Russell Martin. The 39-year-old briefly played for Rangers in 2018 and represented Scotland 29 times. Martin is set to join after reportedly accepting the club’s offer.

Recently in charge at Southampton, Martin impressed Rangers’ new US owners and sporting director Kevin Thelwell with his football philosophy. He beat other candidates like Davide Ancelotti. Former Liverpool star Steven Gerrard also considered the job but eventually pulled out.

CHANGES AT IBROX AND MARTIN’S CAREER SO FAR

Rangers finished the 2024/25 Scottish Premiership season in second place behind Celtic. The campaign was marked by inconsistency and managerial changes. Philippe Clement was sacked in February, with former captain Barry Ferguson taking over as interim coach for the rest of the season.

Russell Martin has managed MK Dons, Swansea City, and Southampton, achieving a 47% win rate. The club’s new owners want Rangers to play attacking football, in line with Martin’s coaching style.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR RANGERS?

Martin’s appointment comes as Rangers prepare for a busy pre-season ahead of another title challenge and a return to European competition. The next official match is scheduled for the start of the 2025/26 Scottish Premiership season in August, but there could be friendlies and Champions League qualifiers before that.

Rangers fans and the board expect to close the gap on Celtic, who finished last season five points clear at the top. Martin’s first test will be building a squad capable of reclaiming the Scottish crown and achieving success in Europe.
