Samuel Mbangula Set to Join Werder Bremen in Major Transfer From Juventus
Werder Bremen are about to sign Samuel Mbangula from Juventus. The Belgian winger will cost €10 million, plus bonuses. He is expected to have his medical in Germany this week.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Werder Bremen and Juventus have agreed on the transfer of Samuel Mbangula, a 21-year-old Belgian winger. Bremen will pay €10 million for the Belgium U21 international, potentially with further add-ons. This transfer becomes one of the most expensive ones in recent Werder Bremen history, only second to Davy Klaassen in 2018. The winger joined Juventus from Anderlecht as a youngster and netted 3 Serie A goals last season, along with a goal in a Champions League matchup against PSV. Mbangula is now flying to Bremen to finalise the deal and complete his medical tests.
BREMER’S SEARCH FOR ATTACKING FIREPOWER
Mbangula’s move comes as a significant boost for Bremen, who had been urgently searching for attacking players. Injuries to key players like Marvin Ducksch, Jens Stage, and Mitchell Weiser made the squad thin. Head coach Horst Steffen’s side had been struggling for goals last season, finding the back of the net only 42 times in 34 matches as they barely stayed afloat in the relegation waters. The 8th-place finish prompted a change in the technical area, which was followed by aggressive reinforcement in the playing squad throughout this winter window. Once signed, Mbangula will become one of the most valued players in the squad, second only to Romano Schmid.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR MBANGULA AND BREMEN?
Mbangula will arrive in Bremen on Monday, and the formalities are expected to commence on Tuesday, with the medical lined up in the morning. The same could be followed by his official unveiling at the Weserstadion before he dons the green and white jersey. Bremen’s pre-season preparations are also currently underway, and the new signing will join the rest of the squad at a training camp, once he is all done with the formalities. Juventus, meanwhile, will now hope to wrap up deals for Francisco Conceicao and Jadon Sancho.
