Saúl Arrives in Brazil to Join Flamengo
Former Spain midfielder Saúl Ñíguez is in Rio de Janeiro, ready to join Flamengo after leaving Atlético Madrid. The experienced player is about to start a new chapter in Brazil’s top division.
SAÚL WELCOMED BY FLAMENGO FANS
Saúl arrived at Rio’s international airport on Tuesday, greeted by Flamengo fans eager to meet him. The 30-year-old, who has agreed to a three-year contract, posed for photos and signed autographs but did not talk to the media. He terminated his deal with Atlético Madrid, supposed to last until June 2026. The transfer should become official after a medical exam on Wednesday.
EXPERIENCE AND HISTORY
Saúl brings strong credentials to Flamengo. He played 427 matches for Atlético Madrid after rising through their youth ranks and earned 19 caps for Spain. Last season, he was on loan at Sevilla, where he played 26 games, scored one goal, and had six assists. The transfer also marks a reunion with Flamengo’s coach Filipe Luis, who played with Saúl at Atlético Madrid and helped bring him to Brazil.
FLAMENGO’S SEASON AND UPCOMING FIXTURES
Flamengo sit second in the Brazilian Serie A, just two points behind leaders Palmeiras. Their next match is against Goiás, currently in 16th place and battling relegation. Then, Flamengo face Internacional in the Copa Libertadores Round of 16 in early August. The club aims to keep the pressure on Palmeiras at the top and hope Saúl will boost their midfield for a demanding schedule.
