Lionel Scaloni has explained his decision to hug Raphinha after Argentina’s 4-1 victory over Brazil in their World Cup qualifying match, emphasizing that it was meant as a “gesture of peace” to ease tensions following the heated build-up to the game.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Raphinha had made provocative comments before the match at the Estadio Monumental, claiming that Brazil would “beat them up on and off the pitch if necessary.” However, Argentina used these words as motivation to secure a dominant 4-1 win over their rivals, dealing a significant blow to Brazil’s World Cup qualification hopes.

WHAT LIONEL SCALONI SAID

When asked about his embrace with Raphinha after the final whistle, Scaloni told reporters: “I forgive Raphinha because I know he didn’t do it on purpose, he defends his team and he didn’t do it on purpose. With or without statements, we would play our game and they would also play theirs. I forgive him because I’m sure he didn’t want to offend anyone.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

The match was highly charged, with Argentina’s players celebrating their goals passionately near the Brazilian team. After the game, Raphinha was involved in heated exchanges with Argentine players, including Emiliano Martinez and Leandro Paredes. Scaloni’s hug appeared to be an attempt to defuse the situation and promote sportsmanship between the rival nations.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Argentina, having already secured their place in the 2026 World Cup, will continue their qualification campaign with upcoming matches. Brazil, currently struggling in the qualifiers with just 21 points from 14 matches, face crucial games against Peru (away) and Colombia (home) as they aim to improve their chances of qualifying for the tournament in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The top 6 places get automatic qualification, and the 7th goes through the play-off. Brazil is only 1 point above 6th place Colombia.
