Scott McTominay Opens Serie A Season with First Goal for Napoli

Scott McTominay scored the first goal of the Serie A season for Napoli in their game against Sassuolo.

WHAT HAPPENED?

In the 17th minute at Sassuolo, McTominay scored with a strong header. He connected with Matteo Politano’s cross. Napoli‘s coach, Antonio Conte, played McTominay on the left wing. He was alongside Frank Anguissa, Stan Lobotka, and Kevin De Bruyne. The goal gave Napoli the lead against Sassuolo, a newly-promoted team returning to the top league.

WHY MCTOMINAY MATTERS TO NAPOLI

McTominay is still one of Napoli’s best players. Last season, he played 48 games and scored 16 goals, helping Napoli win the Serie A title. He was named Player of the Month in April and later the Serie A MVP. His rise has been fast, especially since he was not needed at Manchester United just a year ago. Now, he is nominated for the Ballon d’Or, confirming his status as a top midfielder.

WHAT COMES NEXT?

Napoli’s next game is at home against Cagliari, who is a contender to be relegated this season. Napoli wants to start strong to defend their title, as they are the current Serie A champions looking to secure a second consecutive title under coach Antonio Conte. Sassuolo will try to bounce back in their game against another recently promoted team, Cremonese. The league is open, but Napoli wants to stay on top. They have tough matches against Juventus and AC Milan soon. McTominay’s goal helps Napoli start positively and gain momentum for another title run.
